What must a school website include?

Short answer: maintained schools in England must publish 16 kinds of information online, from contact details and the Ofsted report to the SEN information report, pupil premium strategy and, from September 2026, an allergy safety policy. Academies follow a near-identical DfE list.

What schools must publish

  1. Contact details. Postal address, phone number, the name of the person who handles queries, and your SENCO’s name and contact details (mainstream schools).
  2. Admissions. Community and voluntary-controlled schools link to the council’s admissions page. Foundation and voluntary-aided schools publish their own arrangements by 15 March, in-year arrangements by 31 August and an appeals timetable by 28 February.
  3. Ofsted report. A copy of your latest report, or a link to it on the Ofsted website.
  4. Results. A link to your page on the compare school performance service, plus your latest key stage 2 measures (primary) or key stage 4 and 16 to 18 measures (secondary).
  5. Curriculum. What you teach in each subject in each year, including RE and the right to withdraw from it, your phonics or reading scheme (key stage 1), and how to find out more.
  6. Behaviour policy. Under section 89 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006.
  7. Complaints policy. Including how complaints about SEN support are handled.
  8. Charging and remissions policies. What you charge for, and when you waive or reduce charges.
  9. SEN information report. Updated every year, with your accessibility plan and arrangements for disabled pupils.
  10. Pupil premium strategy. On DfE’s template, by 31 December each year.
  11. PE and sport premium. Amount, spending, impact and year 6 swimming figures, by 31 July each year (primary schools that receive it).
  12. Equality. How you meet the public sector equality duty, updated yearly, and equality objectives, updated at least every four years.
  13. Governance. Your governing body and its committees.
  14. Financial information. How many staff earn over £100,000, in £10,000 bands, and a link to your page on the schools financial benchmarking service.
  15. Allergy safety policy. New from September 2026: published on the website and reviewed at least once a year.
  16. Careers (secondary). Your careers programme and careers lead, and the provider access policy statement.

What schools should publish

The yearly deadlines

Academies and free schools

Academies use DfE’s separate guidance, what academies, free schools and colleges should publish online. Most items match the list above. Their funding agreement and the Academy Trust Handbook add trust-level items such as annual accounts and governance.

Keeping it compliant

The hard part isn’t building these pages, it’s keeping them current. Date every policy, put each deadline in someone’s calendar, and check the site against this list at the start of each term. A PDF that hasn’t changed since 2021 is the first thing an inspector notices.

Questions

What must a school website include in England?

Maintained schools must publish contact details, admissions information, their Ofsted report, performance results, curriculum, behaviour, complaints and charging policies, an SEN information report, pupil premium and PE premium statements, equality information, governance and financial information, and from September 2026 an allergy safety policy.

Do academies have to publish the same things?

Mostly. DfE publishes a separate list for academies, free schools and colleges, and their funding agreement and the Academy Trust Handbook add items such as annual accounts and trust governance. Check the academy list alongside this one.

Does Ofsted check the school website?

Inspectors look at a school’s website as part of preparing for an inspection, so missing or out-of-date statutory information is easy for them to spot. Governors are responsible for making sure it is compliant.

What if a school doesn’t have a website?

It must publish the information on another website and give parents a link, and provide a free paper copy to any parent who asks.

What’s new on school websites for 2026/27?

From 1 September 2026 schools must have an allergy safety policy, reviewed at least yearly and published on the website. Pupil premium statements are still due by 31 December and PE and sport premium reports by 31 July.
